Surgery Care
Are you planning, or have you recently had lipoedema, cosmetic surgery, knee or hip replacement, reconstructive surgery, or any surgery really?
Did you know about the fluid retention that can develop after surgery and could potentially impact your recovery?
Being proactive before and after surgery, can be the difference between recovery in 2-6 weeks v’s 6-18 months.
The sooner you can activate the body’s natural defenses (the Lymphatic System) the better your outcomes.
Depending on what you’ve had done, it can be quite a gruelling experience, talk to Sal on how to make it more manageable, and how you can get the best possible results.
A New Client Initial Consultation 60mins is a great first step.
In your first appointment, Sal will gather all your medical history and details for your upcoming surgery, Then devise a plan to help prepare you for your before and after care.
Should you only find Sal post-surgery, just book in as soon as you can to get your recovery underway. For details of your treatment see tabs below.

Risk of Lymphoedema
Not everyone is at risk of developing lymphoedema, but it’s wise to learn about it, so in the years to come, you know what to look out for. Also, have a professional look at your history and body composition to alleviate any concerns.
Have a read of the ‘What is lymph’ page under the Lymphatics header & the ‘What is Oedema’ & ‘Lymphoedema’ pages under the Conditions header in the main menu to learn more…
Risk of Infection
Any open wound, incision or break in the skin is at risk of infection. It’s very important to keep the area clean, moist and protected from any friction or outside elements at least until the wound closes over. See the Wound Care page under the Lymphatics header for more…..

Signs of infection
- Heat
- Redness, watch for this expanding
- Mucus / slough
- Malodour
- Excessive fluid leakage past the 7-10 days post surgery
Please see your surgeon immediately or get to emergency, if any of the above are present.
Compression Garments
In some cases, your surgeon will provide you with a compression garment as part of your surgery package. Alternatively, you can see Sal to prescribe one for you, if is not available through your surgeon.
Check out the ‘Compression Garments‘ page under the Lymphatics header for more info.
Treatment for Pre & Post Surgery
Sal recommends you have lymphatic drainage massage in the days leading up to your surgery, for the following reasons:
2-3 treatments prior to surgery
- Increase blood and lymph circulation
- Lymph vessel system primed and pumping at an optimum
- Help to minimise assault on the body from the procedure
- Clear pre-existing waste and inflammation
- Scar tissue stimulation for faster recovery
- Activate new growth of lymph vessels
Plus be sure to pre-book your after sessions for within 7-10 days after surgery. This will prevent excessive swelling, and ensure the lymph vessels are active and prepped for regrowth in the event of any damage.
However, if needed, you can get treatment as soon as 2-3 days after surgery (as the technique is extremely gentle, and a well-trained therapist will know where they can and can’t go).
For cosmetic surgeries, you will (or should) have been advised to wear a properly fitted compression garment for 7 days straight, only taking it off to have a shower or for any treatment.
Baseline Treatment Schedule
- Pre-Surgery – 2-3 consecutive treatments in the days leading up to surgery.
- Post-Surgery – 2-3 per week x 3-6 weeks, depending on your progression.
Starting early, getting to all your appointments in the first few weeks will give you the best results, and the possibility of not needing the full 6 weeks or any extended treatment periods.
For Lipoedema reduction surgery – see the Lipoedema page under Services… particular the question for ‘Are you considering Liposuction surgery?’…
